Psalms 1:1

Psalms 1:1

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. 2  But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

Walk not in not Counsel of the ungodly – do not take the advice or plan of the morally wrong

We are not to take advice from sinners but from God.  This can include people that He sends our way.

Isaiah 30:1  Woe to the rebellious children, saith the LORD, that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin:

Spending time with wise people leads us to wisdom, but spending time with the unwise will lead to destruction.

Proverbs 13:20  He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

Advice from those who do not follow God may lead us down the wrong path.

Job 21:16  Lo, their good is not in their hand: the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

Stand not in the way of sinners – do not abide/continue/remain in the course of life or habits of sinners

We are not to follow the lifestyle and habits of sinners.

Proverbs 13:15  Good understanding giveth favour: but the way of transgressors is hard.

Sit not in the seat of the scornful – abides in the place or the assembly of someone who scoffs or mocks

We are not to put or be in the company of people who put others down.  Our job is to build people up with our words.  As we release blessings to others then we will receive blessings.

Proverbs 3:34  Surely he scorneth the scorners: but he giveth grace unto the lowly.

Jeremiah 15:17  I sat not in the assembly of the mockers, nor rejoiced; I sat alone because of thy hand: for thou hast filled me with indignation.

The majority of our company and close relationships are not to be with the world.  We are to stand out from them and to be different in our behavior.

2 Corinthians 6:17  Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,

Delight in the law of the Lord – take pleasure or delight in the Word of God

The Word of God is to be our joy.  We should desire it like a baby desires milk.  We are to crave it like meat and bread.  It is food to our spirit and is vital for our growth in Christ.

Jeremiah 15:16  Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts.

God’s will is found in His Word.  It is to be written on our hearts through studying and meditating.

Psalms 40:8  I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.

We are to live according to the commandments of God because they are our delight and we want to follow them.  We are blessed when we walk in obedience to the Word.

Psalms 119:35  Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight.

Meditate on the law – murmur/speak/study/talk about the Word day and night

We should think about and speak the Word of God to ourselves and to others at all times.  It leads us to success.

Joshua 1:8  This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

Psalms 119:97  MEM. O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day.
