Lessons from Times of Famine

God shows Himself strong in famine

Famine and drought both produce a lack of food and water in the land. During these times God shows Himself strong by working miracles for His people.

We can learn key principles in the Scripture by studying how God dealt with His people in famine.

God can use it to position His people in positions of authority
Genesis 41:56 And the famine was over all the face of the earth: And Joseph opened all the storehouses, and sold unto the Egyptians; and the famine waxed sore in the land of Egypt.
57 And all countries came into Egypt to Joseph for to buy corn; because that the famine was so sore in all lands.

God allowed Joseph to interpret Pharoah’s dream, which warned of 7 years of famine. He also positioned Joseph to be in second in command over Egypt, and to sell to other countries. Look to be elevated as God positions you to be a source of help to people near and far.

Time to hear and obey Divine instruction
1Kings 17:1 ¶ And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the LORD God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.
2 And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying,
3 Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan.
4 And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.

Elijah had to hear God in order to know where to go for provision. In this season, our ears must be attentive to hear God as He leads us. The steps of a righteous man are ordered of the Lord (Psalm 37:23)

Be a tool / catalyst for others to receive their miracle
1Kings 17:14 For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the LORD sendeth rain upon the earth.
15 And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days.
16 And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by Elijah.

After the brook dries up, God sends Elijah to the widow in Zarephath to position her for a miracle. He tells her to prepare him food first even though she was down to her last. She obeys the prophet and receives supernatural provision throughout the drought. God used Elijah to prepare the woman to receive her miracle.

Later the widow’s son dies and Elijah raises him from the dead.

Demonstration of the Love of God
Acts 11:28 And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the Spirit that there should be great dearth throughout all the world: which came to pass in the days of Claudius Caesar.
29 Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judaea:
30 Which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.

God never does anything without first revealing it to His prophets. Agabus warned the people of famine through the Spirit. The result was that relief was sent to Judaea. We as the people of God must come together to help each other. Jesus said that the world would know that we are His disciples by our love for one another (John 13:35). We must demonstrate love by giving (Deuteronomy 17:7; 1 John 3:17).
